Small teams.
Big leverage.

Microteaming combines clear mandates, end-to-end ownership and AI as an amplifier — in autonomous units of three to five people.

The idea

What a microteam is

A microteam is an autonomous unit of three to five people, amplified by AI agents. It owns a value stream end to end — with a clear mandate, minimal dependencies and full accountability.

At its core is a reversal of the usual logic: more leverage per person instead of more people.

The science

Why small teams

Each additional person increases coordination effort disproportionately: with ten people there are already 45 possible communication paths. A growing share of working time flows into coordination instead of value creation.

At the same time, individual accountability declines. The Ringelmann effect describes how per-person performance drops in larger groups as responsibility diffuses. Research on team productivity reaches the same conclusion: small teams deliver considerably more per person.

The lever

AI as a multiplier

Small teams traditionally hit capacity limits. Microteaming resolves this through more computing power instead of more people. AI agents take over execution; the human shifts from operator to orchestrator.

Human (strategy) → AI (execution) → Human (control)

Example: a developer describes a function, an AI agent writes the code, generates test cases and runs them — the human reviews and decides. Hours become minutes, without giving up control.

Building blocks

Three principles

Two-Pizza Rule

If two pizzas cannot feed the team, it is too big (after Jeff Bezos). Size is a decision, not a fate.

Human-in-the-Loop

The human sets direction and controls the result; the AI executes. Responsibility stays human.

End-to-end

A microteam fully owns its value stream — from idea to operations. No handovers, no diffuse responsibility.
